    Breanna, 11, and her mother both have HIV. They live in a small shack with Breanna’s two younger Sisters. At School Breanna was bullied by a neighbours child for her HIV status. She fought with the child and in retaliation the child’s father sexually assaulted Breanna before pinning her against a wall and telling his daughter to beat Breanna. Breanna’s Mother Yolande said ‘Kids who used to play with my kids no longer play with them, they are alone.’ EveryChild Councillors have been working with Breanna and her family to help them accept and manage their situation and access medical help for their HIV status.     Khadisha, 16 years old lives with her mother and two younger brothers. Khadisha’s Mother has been attending EveryChild parenting skills workshops and said ‘I learnt from EveryChild that I have to talk to my children, how to love them. I’ve learnt not to beat them, not to shout, but to show them where they were wrong and where they were right’ ‘Now I discipline them in a manner of love’ Georgetown, Guyana.

    Ferlone, 9 years old. Ferlone’s parents both died from AIDS. She currently lives with her older cousin Wendy and her two sisters Fiona 11 and Fatima 12. Another sister lives elsewhere. All 4 girls briefly lived with their eldest brother after their parents died but he is a drug dealer and the situation became dangerous for all the children. Georgetown, Guyana.

    Melissa, 11yrs in the only bedroom of the house that she shares with her mother Hyacinth and 10 siblings. The House is condemned. Melissa has been excluded from School as she has no shoes. Her family cannot afford them. She is unable to take end of year exams until she gets some. Melissa’s mother often can’t feed the children and is considering placing some in foster care as she is struggling to cope. Georgetown, Guyana.

    Tafara, 11 years old, lives with his two younger sisters and mother in a small shack. Tafara’s mother works six days a week and it is Tafara who is left to look after his siblings. He is missing out on education and exams. Tafara said ‘I feel angry when I can’t go to school. I am at the house and I do nothing.     Vidya, 14yrs lives with her mother and brother. Vidya’s mother physically and verbally abuses her. Her father is an alcoholic and mostly absent. Vidya struggles at school and has self harmed. She likes coming to Rumsfeldt centre to do homework, to read, to write and to talk about her troubles. Georgetown, Guyana.

    Rueshanna, 19, lives with her mother and three younger siblings. The family is poor and Rueshanna often has no money for food or transport to school. The family’s grandfather is an alcoholic who owns the property and regularly threatens to throw the family out, often with extreme physical violence towards Rueshanna’s mother. EveryChild has been working with Rueshanna’s mother through parenting workshops to address her own physical violence towards her children. Georgetown, Guyana

    Terry, 8 years old lives with his Mother Stacey, his uncle and two cousins. He is from a broken family, is a victim of beatings, emotional abuse and his uncle burns him with cigarettes. Terry’s mother Stacey is illiterate and unemployed. She said ‘Life here is very hard; I don’t like it round here. Too much trouble, too much violence, thieving and cursing. There’s no respect. A lot of the big boys who got in trouble are either dead or in prison. Now the little boys want carry it on. I don’t want that for Terry’ EveryChild has been helping both terry and his Mother manage their relationship through regular counselling and support. Georgetown, Guyana.

    Telisha, 12yrs, lives with her mother and younger sister. Her father used to beat her mother and now lives with his girlfriend and her four children not far from Telisha’s home. Telisha has been involved with gangs and in fights at school. Since attending EveryChild workshops she has begun to deal with some of the violence she witnessed as a child and her own behaviour has vastly improved. Georgetown, Guyana.

    Mark 13 years old, was physically abused by his stepfather. He previously lived with his mother who was a drug addict and his younger sister. Marks Grandmother was so concerned about the children she notified social services who placed them in a Children’s home. With the help of EveryChild both children are now living safely with their grandmother. Georgetown, Guyana.

Yolande's Grandmother was so concerned about the children she notified social services who placed them in a Children’s home.
